Our Story
The SJ Productions Adaptive Dance Program Society was created by SJ Dance Productions to make dance accessible to people of all ages, sizes, and abilities. Dance should have no limits — it is about movement, creativity, self-expression, and joy.
SJ Dance Productions has always been committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for dancers, from beginners to professionals. Through classes in ballet, pointe, lyrical contemporary, Broadway jazz, and more — along with two annual productions — dancers of all ages can perform, celebrate their growth, and share their passion with friends, family, and the wider community.
The idea for the adaptive dance program began with one of our dancers, Emma, who is also an occupational therapy student at UBC and a dance assistant at SJ Dance Productions. During one of the classes she was assisting with, she recognized the need for more inclusive dance opportunities for individuals with diverse abilities. She immediately shared this vision and idea with our Director, Sophie, who was enthusiastic and committed to making adaptive dance accessible to those who may otherwise face barriers.
Recognizing that many people with neurodiverse, physical, or developmental differences face barriers in traditional dance programs, this vision was shared with the SJ Productions dance community. Soon, dancers and healthcare professionals—including occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers and dietitians—came together to support this initiative. Through this collaborative effort, the SJ Productions Adaptive Dance Program Society was formed.
The program provides adaptive instruction, supportive tools, and individualized approaches so every dancer can participate fully and confidently. Led by an interprofessional team of volunteers, the SJ Productions Adaptive Dance Program Society offers a safe and inclusive space where every dancer can move, express themselves, and experience the joy of dance — because here, we are all family💛
